Rustic yet sophisticated, &Beyond Grumeti Serengeti Tented Camp lies right in the path of the Great Migration and is exceptionally situated for dramatic river crossings, as well as an abundance of resident wildlife.
Located in the remote Western Corridor of the Serengeti, Grumeti is tucked into the shade of an evergreen forest on the banks of an offshoot of the famous Grumeti River. Black and white colobus monkeys chatter in the foliage and chase each other over the thatched roofs of the tented suites. A resident pod of hippo grunts and grumbles from beneath a layer of luscious green water weeds in the tranquil lagoon in front of the camp.
Game drives from the camp can expect to encounter an exceptional range of resident wildlife, as well as Tanzania’s annual Great Migration. Each year, the massed herds of wildebeest and zebra cross the waters of the Grumeti River, home to some of Africa’s largest crocodile, in search of fresh grazing grounds.

Lodge Features
The Lodge at Grumeti Serengeti Tented Camp, nestled among tall evergreen trees on the water’s edge, &Beyond Grumeti Serengeti Tented Camp offers a wild and remote experience in the thick of the animal action.
Set on the banks of an offshoot of the Grumeti River, &Beyond Grumeti is within easy reach of one of the most famous fording points of the annual wildebeest migration. The Camp provides the perfect vantage point to enjoy the unique sight of vast masses of animals making their dramatic river crossing. Dense riverside thickets hide a multitude of secrets and delights, from the acrobatic antics of colobus monkeys to the brilliant plumage of dozens of bird species.
While providing every comfort, the camp retains a rustic sense of place and night time becomes an adventure as the sounds of the bush take over and hippo call to one another as guests enjoy the comfort of their king size beds.
The only camp in the Serengeti to look out onto a hippo pool, guests can enjoy river views from their spacious tents or from the sun-dappled deck around the sparkling swimming pool. As night descends, the camp buildings and paths are magically lit by flaming torches and lamp and tempting scents entice guests to dinner in the traditional open-air boma.

Morning Game Drive
As dawn breaks over the Serengeti, a gentle tap on your door will wake you to the delights of a new day. Your guide will discuss what you hope to see that day over fragrant tea or coffee and morning biscuits or rusks. Set out in an open 4x4 safari vehicle in the company of your guide. If the Great Migration is passing through the area, your guide will attempt to catch up with it and maybe even see the wildebeest crossing the Grumeti River. Even if the Migration is not in the area, the Grumeti region has excellent resident game. Your guide will break for a hot drink and a snack to refresh you.
Breakfast
Return to the camp for a delicious breakfast, with platters of fruit and cheese followed by a selection of hot breakfast dishes. Choose from eggs, oats, waffles or a number of other options. If you prefer, you can take a packed breakfast and prolong your morning game drive.
Lunch
There's time for a quick siesta before lunch, which is served on colourful decks overlooking the river.
Afternoon Tea
Cool off with a refreshing dip in the camp's pool or watch the frolics of our resident family of hippo. Over late afternoon tea, your ranger will discuss your plans for the afternoon game drive.
Afternoon Game Drive
Head off in search of the wildlife in the cooler late afternoon. The herds head out to drink before settling down for the night, while the predators are warming up for the night's hunting. Stop at a scenic spot for sundowners as the sun sinks beneath the endless plains.
Dinner
Return to the camp for a mouthwatering dinner prepared over traditional fires, jikos or in outdoor ovens. Relax around a blazing fire in the boma and discuss the adventures of the day before heading back to your tent.

Although one get a wonderful collection of species all year round at Grumei, the absolutely wonderful Migration should not be missed.

Inspired by the Great Migration, Grumeti combines a whimsical touch with hues of wildebeest grey and accents of natural stone and bone.
Rustic yet sophisticated, the intimate tents blend perfectly into their environment with their cool grey colour scheme and bleached cypress construction. Elegant yet whimsical, the interiors provide quirky touches and tongue-in-cheek surprises that emphasise the natural beauty of the spectacular setting. All ten of the tented suites look out onto the Grumeti River and its resident pods of hippo, while sliding doors open out onto shaded private decks. Discrete butler’s hatches add to the aura of intimate exclusivity. Stone shower towers are open to the sun and stars, while the grunts of hippo provide a nightly serenade. Local sculptured furnishings and lively décor bring alive the excitement and romance of Africa.
Meals can be enjoyed on an extensive deck with beautiful views towards the river, while the dining area opens up to a traditional African boma, where dinner is served beneath a billion stars. Traditional fires known as jikos and outdoor ovens produce mouth-watering aromas, while the sounds of the African night provide a gentle backdrop to tales of the day’s adventures.
Intimate guest areas include open-fronted sitting and dining areas, as well as a domed bar, all adorned with beaded artefacts. The spacious decks are perfect for enjoying sundowners overlooking the river and the camp’s rim-flow swimming pool provides a view of the hippos lazing in the lagoon.
Wildlife at Grumeti
The Serengeti hosts more than 35 species of plains-dwelling mammals and is renowned for its annual wildebeest migration.
The Park is home to literally millions of large herbivores, as well as the accompanying carnivores and prolific birdlife. Almost two million wildebeest, zebra, eland and Thomson’s gazelle follow the annual rains through the Serengeti to the adjacent Maasai Mara National Reserve in Kenya in search of prime grazing. As the dense herds of herbivores move across the plains, they are shadowed by lion, hyena and cheetah.
The Serengeti is famous for its lion population and a number of prides inhabit the Grumeti area. While largely nocturnal, spotted hyena make the most of the passing annual Migration. At such times, the hyena may be spotted wandering among the herds in the plain light of day.
Another scavenger typically encountered on the outskirts of the Migration is the vulture, with the African white-backed vulture and the Rüppell’s vulture outnumbering the other species. With the grasslands largely open, October is a good time to watch cheetah hunting near Grumeti.
The spectacular black and white colobus monkey is endemic to the area. Uniquely among monkeys, the colobus lack a thumb and are forced to feed solely on leaves by browsing them directly off the trees.
Another resident that is an integral part of life at Grumeti is the hippo. The lettuce-covered pan in front of the camp is the perfect habitat for the amphibious animals, providing much-needed shelter from the blazing sun. Families of grunting hippo cavort in the river during the day and only venture on feeding forays under cover of darkness.

Family Travel
There is so much for families to do at &Beyond Grumeti, from watching the antics of the monkeys to splashing in the swimming pool within sight of the hippo and baking your own pizzas in the wood-fired ovens.
Travelling to Africa with children can be an incredible rewarding experience and a Tanzania safari is recommended for families with children 8 years and older. Grumeti has a family suite that can accommodate up to two adults and three children. The suite consists of two tents that share an enclosed entrance lobby and are connected by an enclosed wooden and canvas walkway. The lodge is also able to accommodate a limited number of triple rooms where an additional bed is set up for parents who wish to share a room with a child aged 16 years or younger.
Subject to availability, families can also book a private safari vehicle, which allows them to tailor game drives to the attention span of younger children, leaving and coming back to the lodge whenever desired.
Please note that, if a private safari vehicle is not booked, children 5 years and younger cannot participate in regular game drives. Children aged 6 to 11 are welcome on regular game drives at the lodge manager’s discretion.

Lake Victoria Trip
This full-day trip to the shores of Lake Victoria promises a combination of wildlife adventures, sightseeing, fishing thrills and cultural insight. A morning game drives through the Serengeti takes guests to the park gate. From here, it is a 20-minute drive to the lake shore, with the option to stop and learn about the work of Africa Foundation at Lukungu Primary School. On arrival at Lake Victoria, guests can choose to set off on a fishing safari excursion in a traditional canoe, pay a visit to the traditional doctor, clap along to the rhythm as the villagers perform a local dance or simply admire the magnificent landscapes. A picnic lunch is served on the lake shore before guests set off on their return journey. Minimum of 2 guests and minimum one months notice required. - Additional costs apply.
