Maasai Mara Game Reserve
The Maasai Mara National Reserve is a huge game reserve in Kenya, next to the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania. It is famous for its lions, leopards and cheetahs. Perhaps the most memorable experience in this part of Africa is the annual Great Migration of zebra, Thomson's gazelle, and wildebeest to and from the Serengeti every year from July to October.
Kenya Safari Holidays in Maasai MaraWith the "Big Five" found in the Maasai Mara, also hippos and crocodiles in the Mara- and Talek Rivers, leopards, hyaenas, cheetahs, jackals, and bat-eared foxes, the Maasai Mara is the perfect place for Kenya safari holidays. Especially when the Great Migration is in full swing, when the millions of wildebeest arrive around July of each year from the Serengeti plains in search of green pastures, to return to the Serengeti around October. This migration involves more than a million wildebeest, numerous Thomson's gazelles, topi, eland, and zebras. This mobile source of food is a great source of easy meat for predators like lion and hyaena. Dramatic river crossings offer wonderful action scenes of animals trying to evade the dangerous crocodiles waiting for them in the water. This safari feast of feasts make the Maasai Mara a true safari vacation heaven - even when the migration is not in full swing. Many antelopes, like Grant's gazelles, impalas, duikers, giraffe and hartebeest add to the diversity of game to be seen.
With more than 470 species of birds in the park, with around half of the migrant species being raptors like vultures, marabou storks, secretary birds, hornbills, crowned cranes, ostriches, long-crested eagles, African pygmy-falcons and the lilac-breasted roller, the Kenya luxury safaris in the Maasai Mara is like a birding heaven.
