Bateleur Camp - Set among forests on the very edge of the Maasai Mara, the intimate Bateleur Camp reflects the ambiance of Kenyan explorers of old.

Wildlife at Bateleur Camp

The Maasai Mara Nature Reserve is home to vast numbers of resident wildlife, as well as the annual Great Migration. Lion, and hyena, as well as the more elusive cheetah and leopard, mingle with the migrating masses, while vulture and jackal await the scraps of the more powerful predators.

The Mara River is also famed for its enormous crocodiles, which lay in wait for the wildebeest and zebra during the migration, when more than two million wildebeest and zebra move in search of prime grazing land.

The migratory wildebeest, zebra, kongoni and topi join abundant elephant, hippo, buffalo, giraffe, lion and cheetah. Leopard and serval are frequently encountered, while endangered black rhino can be found in the dense bush thickets. The Mara River is also famed for its enormous crocodiles, which lay in wait for the wildebeest and zebra during the migration, when more than two million wildebeest and zebra move in search of prime grazing land.

The small and compact Thomson’s gazelle follow the herds in their quest for life-giving water and grazing. Lion, and hyena, as well as the more elusive cheetah and leopard, mingle with the migrating masses, while vulture and jackal await the scraps of the more powerful predators.

The Mara is famous for its magnificent, black-maned lion and guests stand a good chance of viewing these powerful animals. Up to six species of vulture are found in the Mara and one or more of them may often be seen on the sidelines of a lion kill.The rare black rhino are most frequently encountered in the Ngama Hills in the eastern Mara. The Mara hosts a large elephant population, which has had a significant impact on the reserve.

The Mara River is famous for its enormous crocodiles, with massive hippo frequently spotted in the water during the day or feeding out on the plains at night.

The dense riverine forest around the Kichwa Tembo camps is home to two unusual monkey species - the blue monkey and the redtail monkey, with their striking facial patterns.

A Day at Bateleur Camp Maasai Mara

Morning game drive

As dawn breaks over the Maasai Mara, a gentle tap on your door will wake you to the delights of a new day. Your guide will discuss what you hope to see that day over fragrant tea or coffee and morning biscuits or rusks. Set out in an open 4x4 safari vehicle in the company of your guide. If the Great Migration is passing through the area, your guide will attempt to catch up with it and spend some time in the midst of the massed herds. Your guide will break for a hot drink and a snack to refresh you.

Breakfast

Return to the Camp for a delicious breakfast, with platters of fruit and cheese followed by a selection of hot breakfast dishes. Choose from eggs, oats, waffles or a number of other options. If you prefer, you can take a packed breakfast and prolong your morning game drive.

Lunch

There's time for a quick siesta in one of the hammocks strung around the grounds before lunch.

Afternoon Tea

Cool off with a refreshing dip in the Camp's pool, which boasts breathtaking Mara views. Over a late afternoon tea, your guide will discuss what you hope to see during the afternoon game drive.

Afternoon Game Drive / Bush Walk

Head off in search of the wildlife once again in the late afternoon. Or, if you prefer, set out on foot along the Mara River or the Oloololo Escarpment and explore the smaller details of the bush along with your guide.

Dinner

Return to the Camp for a mouthwatering dinner served under African skies. Compare notes about the day's adventures with fellow guests or simply relax around a roaring fire.

All rates are inclusive of VAT and in US Dollars.
Accommodation rates are per person per night sharing.
Long-Stay Rates: May be applied for a combination of &Beyond lodges in Africa (subject to seasonal availability of the offer), for the same guests on a single itinerary. These cannot be used in conjunction with any other &Beyond offers, including Signature offers.
Private 4x4 safari vehicles can be pre-booked at Bateleur Camp at an additional cost and subject to availability.
National park fees are not included in the above mentioned rates - these are charged per 24-hour period.

Activities at Bateleur Camp

Kichwa Nature Trail

Take a leisurely walk in the camp surrounds with a trained ranger. This trail winds through riverine forest, and follows the perimeter of Sabaringo Creek – fantastic bird life.

Mara Hippo Trail

This walking trail offers an exciting opportunity to explore the wilderness on foot, through the plains, riverine forest, savannah grasslands and bush land surrounding Kichwa Tembo and on to the Mara River.

Oloololo Escarpment Trail

The Oloololo Escarpment trail leads from the camp to the top of the escarpment, from where you view the Mara reserve, the Mara river and riverine forest. Rising up to 500 metres above the plains, on a clear day the spectacular view can cover the entire reserve.

Night Game Drive

The &Beyond Kichwa Tembo concession is the only place where guests can experience night game drives in the Maasai Mara. As the sun sinks over the vast horizon, the African bush comes to life with predators and other nocturnal creatures. Guests may have the opportunity to observe fascinating species not normally encountered in daylight. Minimum 4 guests.

Enjoy a delicious breakfast in the bush, either on the banks of the Mara River or on the Oloololo Escarpment. Sip champagne (served on request) whilst enjoying the spectacular panoramic views of the plains below. Minimum 6 guests.

Maasai Dance

Tall Maasai warriors in traditional dress form a guard of honour as guests arrive. Deep, haunting voices burst into song and soon the ground reverberates to the rhythm of their athletic traditional dances as the Maasai leap higher and higher, seeking to outperform each other.

Maasai Village Visit

Guests will be guided through the village by an English-speaking Maasai, who lives in the village. He will introduce your guests to the authentic, daily hustle and bustle of Maasai living. Guests will also have the opportunity to browse through the Maasai Craft Centre and purchase artefacts and souvenirs, which are made in the village — all proceeds are given back to the community.

Children

Children are welcome at &Beyond Bateleur Camp.

Should parents wish to share a room with younger children, the lodge is able to accommodate a limited number of triple rooms, where an additional bed is set up in the parents’ room for children 16 years or younger.

Game drives are available to children aged twelve years and older. Children aged six to twelve are permitted on game drives at the lodge manager’s discretion. While children younger than six cannot participate in game drives, childminders can be arranged during game drives and meal times at an additional cost.
